PAIN MANAGEMENT IN SOUTHEASTERN INSTITUTE FOR RESTORATIVE MEDICINE

Pain Management

At the Southeastern Institute of Restorative Medicine, the goal is to help as many of our patients as possible to become pain-free and achieve substantially improved functionality.

Pain Management

Our approach to musculoskeletal pain and disability is distinct from other non-surgical approaches by not only utilizing osteopathic manipulative medicine but because we treat important causes of these ailments that are often overlooked – joint regeneration of damaged tissues and tightening of ligament laxity. We specialize in an advanced form of injection therapy using Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) d which is a blossoming and grossly under-utilized non-surgical treatment for musculoskeletal disorders.
As a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Thompson utilizes Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment or OMT. Years of training and experience have equipped him to diagnose and treat illness and injury and encourage your body’s natural tendency toward self-healing through manipulation by hand. Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine have a keen understanding of how the body’s systems are interconnected and how each one affects the others. As part of their education, DOs receive special training in the musculoskeletal system, your body’s interconnected system of nerves, muscles, and bones. Using OMT, a DO can effectively treat muscles and joints to relieve pain, promote healing and increase overall mobility. By combining the latest advances in medical technology with OMT, Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine offer their patients the most comprehensive care available in medicine today.

Dr. Thompson is also a proponent of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and stem cell injection therapy, natural therapies using a patient’s own blood to extract and produce high levels of platelets containing growth factors for acceleration in healing and regeneration. PRP and stem cell therapy has been on the rise in recent years, with superstar athletes like Ray Lewis, Tiger Woods, and Alex Rodriquez as fans. The technique of PRP injections to relieve pain and stop inflammation in many musculoskeletal disorders and sports injuries are well known.

Up to 7 types of growth factors as well as cytokines, can be found in PRP. These include Platelet-derived Growth Factor, Transforming Growth Factor-β, Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor, as well as several others.

PRP injection therapy is exceptionally effective in treating acute soft-tissue injuries or chronic tendinopathy like acute Achilles tendon repair, rotator cuff repair, acute ligament injury, muscle injury, and meniscal repair. PRP stimulates a healing cascade in the broken ligaments, tendons, and muscle cartilages and, in some cases, bone regeneration. And best of all, PRP treatments require no extended stays in hospitals nor a prolonged recovery stage.

These facts are even more impressive, considering a recent study showed only 20% of all back surgeries are considered successful after 2 years, and 10-40% of patients suffer from long-term complications from failed back surgery syndrome. Back surgery is the second-leading surgical procedure performed in the US, with approximately 500,000 surgeries performed annually.
Our injections are utilized by the body to repair the painful injured area(s) when the body’s natural healing process is not able to do the job on its own. We utilize an accurate injection of a non-toxic substance into the injured tissue, which causes a temporary and purposeful therapeutic inflammation. The resultant inflammation initiates a beneficial healing cascade causing an increase in blood supply, growth factors, and the migration of stem cells. This eventually produces an increase in collagen that essentially grows stronger tissues and cartilage.
These injections have the unique ability to treat not only the pain but the cause of the pain. This results in permanent stabilization of the joint and, therefore, an end to pain and weakness-all without drugs, surgery, scar tissue, anesthesia, or side effects.
The use of PRP in orthopedics over the last decade has not only shown efficacy in helping to regenerate cartilage and bone but has been proven in a large double-blind study to be more valuable for knee pain than rooster comb or hyaluronic acid injections. These injections use the power of your own blood to promote healing and growth in pursuit of health and avoiding surgery.
