What is Botox?

Botox® is a shortened name for a treatment of botulinum toxin, a neurotoxin treatment that provides a non-permanent correction to the appearance of crow’s feet, laugh lines, and other facial wrinkles that can appear from time to time. Dr. Thompson and his team offer various brands of this toxin – the familiar Botox, along with the highly effective Xeomin®, Dysport®, and Jeuveau®.

How does it work?

Botox® and its sister treatments work by reducing the movement of muscles underneath the skin; effectively, the injection stops the nerve from sending a message to make the facial muscles contract. By doing this, it stops the skin from crinkling, allowing it to relax and become smoother.

What can I expect from a treatment?

An appointment for Botox® injections will usually take somewhere between ten and twenty minutes, and the treatment itself is very quick and simple. It is, of course, an injected treatment, so you may feel something with the insertion of the needle, but this is extremely brief, and the needle is very small.

The number of injections needed will vary depending on the area being treated and the extent of treatment needed; once the injections have been administered, you may notice some gentle reddening at the treatment site, but this should be brief and can easily be covered with concealer. You should notice the benefits of the treatment in the days that follow. Although no downtime is necessary after a Botox® treatment, it is advised that you do not indulge in cardio exercise or any strenuous activity for a set amount of time.

How long do the results last?

Individual results can vary. After a treatment session, you should find that the beneficial effects of Botox® endure for the next three to four months. It is recommended that you make an appointment to have your next treatment as soon as you perceive that the original effects are wearing off. You may well find that with repeat treatment, the smoothing and rejuvenating effects of the injections last for longer.
